"Significance without Symbols in Religious Architecture"
Though Sam has worked on commercial, medical, housing, campus, and other projects, his primary focus is unique residential projects and culturally-sensitive religious structures across the globe. Working with clients of all means, Sam combines budget, vision, and location to create award-winning structures that enhance the human experience. Sam’s obsessive attention to detail, his desire to improve building methods, and his unique consideration for site can be seen in his work developing everything from temples for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (including implementing modular building practices) to his small off-grid mountain cabins.
In the founding of EDIFICE Sam brought together the best talent he has worked with over the two decades of building religious structures all over the world. Not only did he assemble an all-star team of designers, architects and project managers, but EDIFICE built their organization around a streamlined process of project delivery integrating the latest tech and tools. EDIFICE’s project delivery is unmatched in its efficiency and quality of product.

Background

Sam Bawden is Principal | Owner & Founder of EDIFICE Design + Architecture.  Sam is a maker by heart, an architect by training, a craftsman by calling, and an entrepreneur by accident.  Sam’s desire to make things better led him to found EDIFICE with the purpose of creating beautiful structures that inspire and edify.  To Sam, a building that edifies is one that elevates our thoughts, our actions, and our lives.  It isn’t loud or obnoxious, but it quietly becomes the backdrop for life.  He believes this is achieved through marrying the desires of the client with their chosen site in a way that synthesizes and improves both.

Sam graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S. in Architectural Studies and a Master of Architecture with honors in design.  His thesis “Significance without Symbols in Religious Architecture” was adopted as a graduate-level course the year following his graduation.  Sam was involved with that course as an adjunct professor for several years.  Sam’s recreational pursuit of snowboarding/splitboarding led to him founding Cardiff Snowcraft.  Sam is currently designing snowboards, skis, and art for their graphics, future products, buildings, residences, and loves it all.  To him it is all the same, the creation of things that edify.
